Hair Extension Maintenance

Please follow the instructions below carefully to ensure you achieve maximum longevity and the best results from your extensions.

The Right Products

Only use sulfate-free shampoo on your extensions and keep conditioner away from the bonds. Gather hair in a low ponytail at the back of the neck and condition from this area down. Keep other products using alcohol away from fusion extension bonds and slippery, oily or waxy products away from tape-in bonds. Shop recommended products with us!

Everyday Care

  • Run your fingers between your bonds / rows every day to keep extensions from tangling together. It is very important to be gentle with your hair extensions. They are attached to small amounts of your own hair. While hair extensions themselves will not harm your hair, rough handling of them will pull your hair and may cause damage.

  • Brush extensions 2-3 times a day with the recommended hair extension brush. Start at the bottom and work your way up to avoid damage to your extensions. Always pull extensions into a covered hair tie or braid while sleeping to prevent tangling. Never go to bed with wet hair.

  • Curling irons, flat irons and hot rollers may be used, but must be kept an adequate distance from the bonds / attachment points. KTip / Fusion extensions are heat-activated and can possibly melt and cause slipping if heat gets too close to the bonds.

  • In order to extend the life of your extensions it is recommended to only wash every 2-3. Most clients find that they have to wash their hair less often with extensions especially with the aid of a dry shampoo. If you still was your hair extensions frequently, use a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week to help maintain the integrity of the hair.

  • Some extension loss and shedding is normal and to be expected. Expect to lose up to 1-4 extensions a month for ITips or KTips. Average client hair loss is 50-150 hairs a day. A full head application covers approximately one third of the head. You can expect to see naturally released hairs trapped in the attachments after some time. This is normal and should not be interpreted as hairs pulled from the scalp by the extensions themselves. Daily brushing close to the scalp and finger separation of the applied strands will avoid matting in this area.

Special Non-Daily Care

  • Once a week, perform a deep conditioning treatment on your extensions, again from the shoulders down. Leave it on the hair for approximately 20 to 30 minutes (or overnight for excessively dry extensions, in a shower cap) and rinse. This extra TLC will give your hair a moisturizing boost

  • Use a gentle clarifying shampoo once every 3 - 4 weeks to clear build-up. (This also lets conditioner set in better)

  • Do not over wash your extensions however, the bonds will need to be thoroughly cleaned. Using a loonie size amount of shampoo, apply directly to the scalp and massage in between each bond and gently smooth the shampoo down the entire length of the extension. Wash your hair up to 2 to 3 times per week (unless your hair oily in which case, shampoo more often) and if needed, a dry shampoo can be used on the top of your head (on the natural hair) in between washing's. Make sure bonds and extensions are completely dry before going to bed or putting hair up for an extended amount of time

Activities

  • When swimming, it is recommended to wear a cap or keep hair out of chemically treated water. If you choose to swim in a pool, shampoo hair immediately after.

  • Activities taking place in a constant, damp environment such as aerobics, steam baths or saunas, as well as excessively hot environments such as tanning beds may lessen the longevity of the extensions. Dry your bonds as soon as possible after any of these activities. Tape-in extensions are very susceptible to loosening and falling out when wet.
